Magnifying glass over stacked documents with glowing checkmarks — SEO checklist

Most new websites lose the first 3-6 months of organic growth by launching without an SEO foundation. This SEO checklist for new websites covers every technical, on-page, and off-page item we work through before pushing a client site live — and the ones we complete in the first 30 days after launch.

Technical SEO checklist (pre-launch)

  • HTTPS enabled with a valid SSL certificate.
  • One canonical version of the site (www vs non-www, http vs https) with 301 redirects.
  • Mobile-first responsive design; test on Chrome DevTools mobile emulator.
  • Core Web Vitals in the green: LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1.
  • XML sitemap created and submitted to Google Search Console.
  • robots.txt configured to allow crawling of all indexable pages.
  • Structured data (Organization, Website, BreadcrumbList) added via JSON-LD.
  • Clean, keyword-friendly URLs (no /page?id=123).
  • 404 page returns a proper 404 status, not 200.

On-page SEO checklist

  • Unique <title> under 60 characters on every page, primary keyword near the front.
  • Meta description under 160 characters that would actually be clicked.
  • One H1 per page containing the primary keyword.
  • Descriptive, keyword-rich H2/H3s that map to search intent.
  • Image alt text on every meaningful image.
  • Internal links from high-authority pages to money pages.
  • Open Graph and Twitter Card tags for social sharing.

Content SEO checklist

Publish at least one authoritative page per money keyword before launch — homepage, top-3 service or product pages, and a strong About page. Thin sites (fewer than 10 real pages) struggle to build topical authority no matter how many backlinks they earn.

Off-page & analytics (first 30 days after launch)

  • Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Install GA4 and set up 3-5 key conversion events.
  • Claim your Google Business Profile if you serve a local market.
  • Get listed on 5-10 relevant, high-quality directories.
  • Publish a launch announcement on LinkedIn and X and get natural backlinks.
  • Monitor Search Console coverage weekly for indexing issues.

Frequently asked questions

How long until a new website ranks on Google?

Most new sites see their first meaningful organic traffic between 3 and 6 months after launch, assuming clean technical SEO and consistent content publishing. Competitive niches can take 9-12 months.

Do I need backlinks for a new website?

Yes — but focus on quality over quantity. A handful of niche-relevant backlinks from real websites beats dozens of directory or PBN links. Start with digital PR, guest posts, and unlinked brand mention reclaim.
